Beijing Says Washington’s Focus on AI Won’t Help Healthy Development

NEW YORK: China’s UN Ambassador Fu Cong said the US focus on certain artificial intelligence (AI) investments in China is not conducive to the «healthy development» of AI technology.

Previously, the United States has issued draft rules to ban certain investments in AI and other technological fields in China that could threaten American national security. Fu Cong said they oppose these sanctions. His statement follows the UNGA’s unanimous adoption of a resolution drafted by China aimed at strengthening global cooperation on AI.

The resolution calls on the world to “provide and promote a fair, inclusive, open and non-discriminatory business climate throughout the entire lifecycle of safe, secure and trustworthy AI systems.

Fu said the US actions are not conducive to an inclusive business climate and urged Washington to backtrack on the issue.

The U.S. Treasury Department released the proposed rules after U.S. President Joe Biden signed an executive order last August as part of a broader effort to prevent U.S. know-how from helping the Chinese develop sophisticated technologies and dominate markets.
